Mapfre
Global insurance and reinsurance for personal and commercial
About Mapfre
The story begins not in a bustling financial hub, but in rural Spain in 1933. A group of agricultural landowners, known as the Association of Owners of Rural Properties in Spain, created a mutual insurance company to cover their farm workers. This was the origin of Mapfre, an acronym for its Spanish name. The company's trajectory shifted decisively in 1955 when Ignacio Hernando de Larramendi was appointed General Director. Facing near bankruptcy, he refocused the business, laying the groundwork for future growth. This set the stage for expansion, and by the 1970s, Mapfre began its international push, starting with assistance and reinsurance activities in Latin America. By 1983, it was the leading insurance company in Spain. A pivotal chapter in Mapfre's story was its transformation in 2006. The company undertook a complex process of demutualization, converting from a policyholder-owned mutual to a publicly-traded stock company. This move, a first of its kind in Spain, provided greater access to capital for global expansion. A key part of this new corporate structure was the role of the Fundación MAPFRE, which became the largest shareholder, ensuring the company's independence while continuing its social commitments. This new structure fueled further growth, including the major 2008 acquisition of The Commerce Group, an insurer based in Massachusetts. Today, Mapfre operates on five continents, a global insurance player that grew from a specialized mutual society providing a safety net for farm laborers.
