In 1990, a company called Open Software Associates, which grew out of HP's Australian Software Organisation, was founded to tackle a growing problem for large businesses. Companies were spending millions on software from vendors like Microsoft and Adobe, but had little insight into how it was being used. The firm, later known as ManageSoft, provided a solution: enterprise software management. ManageSoft developed tools that gave companies control over their software assets. Their platform handled inventory, license compliance, and software deployment, becoming a key player in the software asset management space. By providing clarity and control, ManageSoft helped businesses ensure they were compliant with licensing agreements and not overspending. The company grew, eventually managing software on over three million devices for hundreds of enterprise customers. The story took its pivotal turn in May 2010 when Flexera Software, a major player in managing high-value datacenter applications, announced it was acquiring ManageSoft. The move was a strategic masterstroke. Flexera had deep expertise in the datacenter, while ManageSoft dominated the desktop. The combination created the industry’s first comprehensive solution to optimize software usage from the desktop to the datacenter, marking a logical and successful exit for the Australian-born company.
