In August 2023, Mahjong Meta secured $12 million in a funding round led by Dragonfly and Folius Ventures, with participation from other investors including Meteorite Labs, Find Satoshi Lab, Parallel Ventures, and Emoote. This capital is intended to fuel product development and expand the Web3 gaming ecosystem.

Mahjong Meta operates on a "Play to Own & Skill to Earn" model, creating a blockchain-supported environment for Mahjong enthusiasts. It integrates strategic gameplay with a Web3 ownership economy. The platform offers various game modes, including ranking matches, tournaments, and playgrounds for player-versus-player competition. A key feature is the use of AI-powered pets called "Tamas," which players can deploy for automated battles using customized strategies. This feature is designed to lower the entry barrier for new players.

The in-game economy utilizes NFTs for items like Tamas, skill cards, and cosmetics, which are tradable on the platform's marketplace. During its beta phase, the trading volume for its 0xMahjong and 0xTama NFTs approached 500 ETH on OpenSea. The platform has two main currencies: MAJ, the governance token, and MJU, an in-game currency pegged 10:1 to USDT for transactions. Recently, Mahjong Meta has evolved into Mahjong Verse, expanding into a multi-game ecosystem built around the Mahjong IP, including titles like Mahjong123 and Mahjong Tycoon, and operating across multiple blockchains such as Ethereum, Solana, and Ton.
