MagLev Aero’s core product is the MagLev HyperDrive™, a proprietary propulsion system designed for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The technology adapts the magnetic levitation principles used in high-speed trains for aviation. Instead of a central shaft, the HyperDrive™ is a rim-driven system where the blades are suspended, guided, and driven by a circular magnetic levitation mechanism. This architecture allows for a higher blade count and the use of the most effective outer portion of the blade, which can spin at lower speeds. The primary benefits of this design are a significant reduction in noise, high efficiency, and enhanced safety.
The system's key features include a many-bladed annular rotor and a passive magnetic bearing, which improves safety and creates a highly redundant, distributed electric propulsion system. By distributing the propulsive force, the system can reportedly continue to operate even if some components fail. This approach aims to solve critical challenges for urban air mobility, particularly noise pollution, which is a major barrier to public acceptance of eVTOLs in populated areas. The company claims its system can reduce blade loading by up to 90% and noise by 25 decibels.
MagLev Aero's business model is to supply its propulsion system to aircraft original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) rather than building its own aircraft. The company is targeting a range of applications, from unmanned cargo drones to passenger-carrying air taxis for urban and regional transit. It has entered into a technology collaboration with XTI Aerospace to evaluate the integration of the HyperDrive™ into future hybrid-electric aircraft and has a non-binding pre-order for up to 100 propulsion units. MagLev Aero is also partnering with GE Additive to develop additive manufacturing processes for its platform. The company expects to have a subscale technology demonstrator flying around 2025 or 2026.
