About Lydian Labs

Lydian Labs, founded in 2021 by CEO Joe Rodden and CTO Dr. Branko Zugic, is a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company focused on decarbonizing the aviation industry. Rodden, an MBA graduate from Harvard Business School, brings experience in finance and strategy from his time at BlackRock and Form Energy. Zugic is a chemical engineer with over 20 years of experience in novel materials for energy, including developing nanoporous metal catalysts at Harvard that inspired Lydian's core technology. The two met at a Harvard Business School pitch competition, combining Zugic's chemical engineering background with Rodden's expertise in power markets to tackle sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The company's primary business is the production of sustainable fuels and chemicals from captured carbon dioxide, water, and renewable electricity. Lydian employs a power-to-liquids (PtL) model, targeting commercial, cargo, and defense aviation sectors as its primary clients. The business generates revenue by producing and selling drop-in e-fuels that can replace conventional jet fuel, aiming to reduce lifecycle emissions by up to 95%. This approach addresses the scalability limitations of biofuel feedstocks by using abundant inputs like waste CO2 and renewable power.

Lydian's core product is a fully-electrified, modular reactor system that operates at high temperatures to convert CO2 and hydrogen into syngas, which is then processed into fuel. A key feature is the system's ability to operate variably, drawing power when renewable electricity is cheapest, thus lowering operational costs and reducing strain on the grid. The technology is designed to be more energy-efficient than competing e-fuel processes, potentially consuming 30% to 50% less energy for CO2 reduction. In January 2025, the company successfully commissioned a pilot plant in North Carolina capable of producing up to 25 gallons of SAF per day. Lydian has raised a total of $18 million from investors including Congruent Ventures, Galvanize Climate Solutions, Union Square Ventures, and Grok Ventures. The company is targeting the launch of a commercial-scale demonstration plant in 2027 and a full-scale commercial facility by 2030, with a projected capacity of 20 million gallons per year.
