About Luvo (formerly Flashnotes)

Luvo, formerly known as Flashnotes, operated as an online marketplace tailored for the higher education market. The company was founded in 2009 by Michael Matousek and Nik Sehgal. Its core business was to provide a platform where college students could buy and sell course-specific academic materials, including notes, study guides, and flashcards. The business model centered on facilitating a student-to-student exchange, where the company retained a 30 percent commission from the sales made on its platform.

In a significant strategic expansion in September 2015, the company rebranded from Flashnotes to Luvo and broadened its services to include on-demand online tutoring. This move allowed students to connect with peers or professional tutors for live video help 24/7, with billing calculated by the minute based on the tutor's set hourly rate. To build confidence in its new offering, Luvo introduced the "Do Better Guarantee," which promised a full refund to students if their grades did not improve after using the tutoring services. Key strategic partnerships were established with Barnes & Noble College and Cengage Learning. The collaboration with Barnes & Noble College aimed to introduce the Luvo marketplace to over 2.5 million students across more than 200 campuses.

Throughout its history, the company secured over $14 million in funding from investors such as Atlas Ventures, Stage 1 Ventures, Cengage Learning, and Barnes & Noble. It also grew through the acquisition of competitors like NoteUtopia and Moolaguides. Despite its initial traction and expansion into tutoring, Luvo faced significant operational challenges. A primary difficulty was the high cost associated with acquiring student content creators on a campus-by-campus basis. An attempt to pivot to a model focused on materials for general education courses offered nationwide did not prove successful. Consequently, Luvo ceased operations and shut down in May 2016.
