Positioning itself in the competitive podcasting market, Luminary operates a subscription-based podcast network. The company was co-founded in 2018 by Matt Sacks, Joe Purzycki, Phong Nguyen, and Pete Amaro. The Luminary app, available on iOS, Android, and the web, includes features designed to improve the listening experience, such as personalized recommendations, offline downloads, variable playback speed, and a sleep timer. In June 2021, Luminary expanded its distribution by launching a channel on Apple Podcasts, making its original content available to listeners in over 170 countries.

Co-founder Matt Sacks initially served as CEO before becoming Executive Chairman in late 2019, with former HBO executive Simon Sutton taking the CEO role. The company has also attracted further investment, including a convertible debt round of $30 million in May 2020 and an investment from Dave Chappelle's Pilot Boy Productions in March 2022.
