About Lumidigm

Founded in 2001 and headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Lumidigm carved a niche in the biometrics sector by developing and manufacturing fingerprint sensors based on its patented multispectral imaging (MSI) technology. The company's core business revolves around providing biometric identity management solutions for a diverse client base that includes financial institutions, healthcare, government services, and enterprise-level clients for applications like point-of-sale, physical and logical access control, and time and attendance systems. Lumidigm's revenue was generated through the sale of its fingerprint sensors and licensing of its sophisticated software and algorithms.

The company's key technological differentiator is its multispectral imaging. Unlike conventional fingerprint readers that capture only the surface details of a finger, Lumidigm's technology uses multiple light spectrums and advanced optical techniques to scan both the surface and subsurface of the skin. This method allows for the capture of unique fingerprint characteristics from the capillary beds beneath the skin, resulting in a high-quality, reliable image even when dealing with problematic finger conditions such as dryness, wetness, age, or dirt. A significant benefit of this subsurface scanning capability is a robust liveness detection feature, which effectively discriminates between a live finger and a fraudulent copy, thereby preventing spoofing attempts.

After receiving venture funding from investors including Intel Capital, Draper Fisher Jurvetson Management, and others, Lumidigm demonstrated significant market penetration, particularly in emerging markets in South America and Africa. The company's trajectory culminated in its acquisition by HID Global, a subsidiary of Assa Abloy, in February 2014 for a reported sum exceeding $60 million. At the time of the acquisition, Lumidigm had 33 employees and was expected to generate sales of $25 million in 2014. The acquisition integrated Lumidigm's MSI technology into HID Global's broader portfolio of secure identity and strong authentication solutions.
