Lumi Labs was founded in 2018 by former Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer and her long-time colleague Enrique Muñoz Torres, who also worked with her at Google and Yahoo!. The company was established as a technology incubator based in Palo Alto, operating out of the original Google office, a symbolic return to roots for Mayer. The name "Lumi" is Finnish for "snow," reflecting a personal preference of Mayer's.

Initially, Lumi Labs focused on artificial intelligence and consumer media, with the stated goal of addressing everyday problems through technology. In November 2020, the company rebranded to Sunshine and launched its first product, Sunshine Contacts. This application uses AI to organize and improve users' contacts on their iPhones and Google accounts by leveraging intelligent algorithms and public data. Mayer has expressed that the startup's mission is to tackle smaller, practical applications of AI that can benefit people daily, such as managing contacts, events, and groups.

Lumi Labs secured $20 million in venture capital funding, signaling investor confidence in the founders' vision and track record. Mayer's background includes being the 20th employee at Google, where she played key roles in the development of major products like Google Search, Gmail, and Google Maps before her tenure as CEO of Yahoo!. Muñoz Torres has worked closely with Mayer throughout her career, including leading search and advertising at Yahoo!. The company's first product, Sunshine Contacts, aims to solve the common issue of messy mobile contact books, with plans to expand into a larger portfolio of consumer-focused applications.
