About luca

Initially developed for digital contact tracing during the COVID-19 pandemic, luca has evolved into an AI-powered guest experience platform for the hospitality industry. The company, culture4life GmbH, was founded in the summer of 2020 by the Berlin firm neXenio and members of the band “Die Fantastischen Vier,” including Patrick Hennig, who now serves as CEO. The initial goal was to support restaurants, cafes, and cultural venues by digitizing the paper-based contact tracing system required at the time.

The app was widely adopted in Germany, with 13 federal states signing contracts for its use, leading to over 40 million users and 450,000 participating locations. As the pandemic subsided, luca pivoted in April 2022 to become a comprehensive service platform for the hospitality sector, focusing on booking, ordering, and payment services. In May 2022, the company launched its payment service, 'luca Pay', and deleted all user data collected during the pandemic.

luca's business model is centered on providing a suite of digital tools for hotels, restaurants, and event organizers to streamline operations and enhance the guest journey. The platform offers features for discovery, reservations, digital ordering, and various payment solutions, including QR code payments, hardware terminals, and 'Tap to Pay' functionality that turns a smartphone into a card reader. This integrated system connects with a venue's existing POS, allowing for a seamless flow from table booking to final payment. The company generates revenue through its payment solutions, which feature a transparent fee model without activation fees or required hardware. For guests, the app provides a single point of interaction for discovering venues, booking tables, ordering, and paying bills, including features for splitting payments.

The company has continued to expand its offerings, acquiring the GastroTech apps DIDIT and DiscoEat in June 2023 and partnering with the HR Group in December 2023 to expand into the hotel sector. The management team includes CEO Patrick Hennig, CTO Philipp Berger, and COO Philipp Eisbacher.
