LocalStack

The founding of LocalStack was a direct result of the co-founders' professional experiences. Waldemar Hummer, who holds a PhD in Computer Science, encountered the slow and costly nature of cloud-based testing firsthand while at Atlassian. Gerta Sheganaku brought her extensive expertise in product management and testing to the venture. Together, they aimed to address the friction in cloud development by creating a local emulation platform. Hummer's background also includes roles as Head of Engineering at Zurich Insurance and Cloud/AI Tech Lead at IBM, while Sheganaku serves as co-CEO alongside him.

LocalStack operates on a freemium model, providing a free, open-source version with core functionalities and paid tiers for advanced features and enterprise needs. Its business model generates revenue through subscriptions to its Pro and Enterprise versions, which offer an expanded set of emulated services, team collaboration features, and dedicated support. The company serves a wide range of clients, from individual developers and startups to large enterprises, including names like SiriusXM, Chime, Autodesk, Apple, and NASA. The platform supports over 100 AWS services, allowing developers to test everything from simple functions to complex infrastructure configurations locally before deploying to the live cloud environment. The solution is designed to reduce deployment times, with the company claiming it can cut deployment from 28 minutes to 24 seconds.

The company has successfully secured funding to fuel its growth, including a $3.2 million seed round in 2021 and a $25 million Series A round in November 2024, led by Notable Capital with participation from CRV and Heavybit. This funding is aimed at expanding its go-to-market efforts in the U.S. and advancing product development. LocalStack is also expanding its emulation capabilities beyond AWS, with a version for Snowflake already launched and a product for Microsoft's Azure in development.
