About LinkNYC
LinkNYC is a public-private partnership with New York City, operating a communications network that replaces outdated payphones with modern kiosks providing free public services. The initiative was announced in November 2014 by the office of then-Mayor Bill de Blasio, with the first kiosks, known as "Links," installed in late 2015. The project is managed by CityBridge, a consortium of companies including Intersection and Boldyn Networks, which are experts in technology, media, and connectivity. Intersection, a key member, was formed from the merger of Control Group and Titan and is backed by a Sidewalk Labs-led group of investors.
The company's business model is primarily funded through advertising revenue generated from the kiosks' large digital displays, making the services free for users and at no cost to taxpayers. This model was projected to generate over $500 million in revenue for New York City over the first 12 years. However, after facing financial difficulties with a revenue model based solely on advertising, the franchise agreement was amended in 2021 to include revenue from 5G cellular services to ensure the program's expansion and financial stability. LinkNYC serves residents, visitors, and small businesses across the five boroughs, aiming to bridge the digital divide by providing essential connectivity to underserved communities.
LinkNYC kiosks offer a suite of free services. These include high-speed, encrypted gigabit Wi-Fi with a radius of up to 150-400 feet, free domestic phone calls, two USB charging ports, and a tablet for accessing city services, maps, and directions. The structures also feature a dedicated red button for 911 emergencies. In 2022, the program introduced "Link5G," a new generation of 32-foot-tall kiosks designed to expand both Wi-Fi and 5G cellular service equitably across the city. The kiosks are designed to be accessible, with features like a tactile keypad with Braille and a video relay system for users with disabilities.
