Liberate Bio

Liberate Bio is a biotechnology company founded in 2022 that is developing a technology platform to deliver genetic medicines to tissues and organs beyond the liver. The company was co-founded by Nessan Bermingham, an operating partner at Khosla Ventures and founder of Intellia Therapeutics; Michael Mitchell of the University of Pennsylvania; Stephen Scully; and Theresa Reineke of the University of Minnesota. Shawn Davis joined as CEO and Walter R. Strapps as CSO in May 2023.

The company's core technology is the RAPTOR™ platform, an AI-driven system designed to make extrahepatic (outside the liver) delivery of genetic medicines scalable. This platform enables the direct testing of numerous novel lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) in non-human primates at a significantly lower cost, generating human-relevant data more rapidly than traditional methods. By using RNA barcoding, the platform can test hundreds of nanoparticles simultaneously. This approach aims to solve a primary bottleneck in genetic medicine, which is the difficulty of delivering therapies like mRNA and CRISPR to cells outside the liver.

Liberate Bio's business model involves a dual strategy of licensing its delivery technologies to third parties and building its own internal therapeutic pipeline. The company's initial programs include an in-vivo CAR-M therapy for solid tumors and efforts related to sickle cell disease. Its lead LNPs have shown the ability to deliver mRNA to monocytes and macrophages in the bone marrow while reducing accumulation in the liver. The company has received seed funding from Khosla Ventures, raising $31 million as of October 2025. It is focused on advancing its first in vivo cell therapy candidate toward human trials.
