About Leyou
The journey of video game holding company Leyou Technologies is unconventional. It began not with code, but with poultry. Founded by Lin Qinglin, the business started as Sumpo Food Holdings, a chicken meat supplier that counted KFC and McDonald's as clients in China. In 2011, Sumpo went public on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Facing declining profits in the poultry industry, the company pivoted. In 2014, led by new CEO Alex Xu, formerly of Perfect World, the company acquired a majority stake in Canadian video game developer Digital Extremes, the creator of the popular online game *Warframe*. This marked a strategic shift into the gaming sector. The company renamed itself Leyou Technologies in 2015 and continued its expansion, acquiring developer Splash Damage in 2016 and divesting its original poultry business entirely. The company’s focus on high-quality, free-to-play online games attracted significant attention. By 2019, 70% of Leyou's gross profit was generated by its games business. This success culminated in a major event in December 2020, when the tech giant Tencent acquired Leyou for approximately $1.5 billion, taking the company private.
