Lens Protocol
A composable and decentralized social graph, ready for you to build on so you can focus on creating a great experience, not scaling your users
About Lens Protocol
Lens Protocol is a decentralized social graph built on the Polygon blockchain, designed to provide an alternative to the centralized architecture of traditional social media platforms. The protocol was introduced in early 2022 by Stani Kulechov, the founder of the decentralized finance (DeFi) lending platform Aave. Kulechov, a Finnish entrepreneur with a Master's in Law, was motivated by the shortcomings of Web 2.0 social media, particularly concerning data ownership, censorship, and the ways platforms monetize user content. His journey into the intersection of finance and technology, starting with early experiments in coding and culminating in the success of Aave, provided him with the foundation to address these issues in the social media landscape.
The core of Lens Protocol's operation is the empowerment of users by giving them control over their digital identities and content through the use of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). When a user joins the network, they mint a Profile NFT, which serves as the central hub for all their activity, including posts, comments, and relationships with other users. This structure ensures that the user, not the platform, owns their data and social graph, allowing them to take it across any application built on the Lens ecosystem. The protocol is designed to be composable, meaning developers can permissionlessly build a wide array of social media applications and features on top of this shared social layer. This open and interoperable environment fosters a diverse ecosystem of applications, from social networks like Hey (formerly Lenster) to various other social tools and platforms.
Lens Protocol's business model diverges significantly from the ad-based revenue models of Web2 giants. Instead, it facilitates direct monetization for content creators. A key feature is "Collects," which allows creators to sell their content directly to their followers, who can then own it as an NFT. This creates a direct financial relationship between creators and their audience, bypassing intermediaries. The protocol does not rely on selling user data; rather, its economic model is built on the value exchanged directly within its user-centric ecosystem. The platform serves a growing community of Web3 natives, creators, and developers who are seeking more control and economic upside from their online social interactions.
