Lengoo
Enterprise platform for expert AI systems
About Lengoo
Lengoo, founded in 2014 by Christopher Kränzler, Alexander Gigga, and Philipp Koch-Büttner, positioned itself as an AI-first translation technology company. The company's genesis stemmed from Kränzler's experience managing freelance translators for an IT consultancy, which highlighted the potential for automating and optimizing translation workflows. He, along with Gigga and Koch-Büttner, all of whom studied at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, established the company to address this opportunity.

Initially, Lengoo operated as a platform to streamline the translation process. The firm later pivoted to focus on artificial intelligence, specifically developing custom neural machine translation (NMT) systems for enterprise clients. This technology works by training language models on a client's existing translation data, allowing the AI to adapt to specific terminology, style, and tone. The result was a system capable of producing high-quality draft translations that professional translators could then refine, reportedly increasing their speed by three to six times. The company's offerings included translation, content creation, and knowledge discovery, accessible via a web app, plugins, and an API. Lengoo's business model focused on providing these services to enterprise customers across various sectors, including technology, healthcare, and finance, promising cost savings of up to 50% and a threefold reduction in turnaround times compared to traditional methods. Clients included prominent European enterprises and unicorns.
Significant milestones for the Berlin-based startup included participation in the Techstars accelerator program in 2016 and receiving the Deloitte Fast 50 Award in 2018 as one of Germany's fastest-growing tech companies. Lengoo successfully raised a total of $34 million over four funding rounds, including a $20 million Series B round in January 2021 led by Inkef. These funds were intended to fuel global expansion and further development of its proprietary NMT framework. Despite its growth and technological advancements, Lengoo filed for bankruptcy in March 2024.
