LED Lighting Fixtures, Inc. (LLF) was a manufacturer of light fixtures and fittings, specializing in developing light sources for general illumination from light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The company, founded in 2005 and headquartered in Morrisville, North Carolina, provided lighting solutions for residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional applications. Its mission was to accelerate the adoption of LEDs in high-volume general lighting to help consumers reduce energy and maintenance costs. In a significant development, Cree, Inc. (now Wolfspeed) announced its acquisition of the privately-held LLF on February 8, 2008, a transaction that was completed on February 29, 2008. The deal was valued at approximately $77 million in cash and stock, with potential for an additional $26.4 million based on product milestones and employee retention. This acquisition allowed Cree to expand its market reach directly into the lighting sector, encompassing LED chips, components, and complete lighting solutions. Following the acquisition, LLF was renamed Cree LED Lighting Solutions, and Neal Hunter, a co-founder of Cree and the then-chairman and CEO of LLF, rejoined Cree to lead the new division. Before the acquisition, LLF had raised $23 million in funding from investors including Digital Power Capital and Presidio Ventures. The company was recognized in the industry for developing a viable and energy-efficient LED downlight for general illumination, a key factor that drove Cree's interest. The strategic purchase enabled Cree to further promote retrofit solutions to convert existing lighting infrastructure to more energy-efficient LED technology.
