The company was established in 2004 and emerged from its initial phase in 2006. A significant milestone in the company's history was its acquisition by Osram in June 2017, a move that integrated LED Engin into Osram's Specialty Lighting business unit. At the time of the acquisition, LED Engin had approximately 30 employees and annual sales of around $10 million.

LED Engin's business revolves around the production and sale of advanced LED emitters, optics, and light source modules. The company's product portfolio is built upon its proprietary LuxiGen platform, which enables a high degree of flexibility in light output and color spectrum. Products include multi-die packages with various color offerings such as red, green, blue, amber, white, ultraviolet, and infrared. A notable product is the LuxiTune, a single-emitter light engine capable of dimming from 3000K to 1800K. These products cater to a range of specialty markets requiring powerful and compact light sources. Clients include designers and engineers in sectors like entertainment, architectural lighting, medical, horticulture, and industrial applications such as printing and curing. Before being acquired, the firm had secured significant venture capital, raising $12 million in a Series E financing round in 2013 and a total of $23 million over three rounds.

Under the leadership of CEO David Tahmassebi, who has been with the company since 2006, LED Engin established itself by addressing niche markets with customized and high-performance lighting needs. The company was already a close partner to Osram, frequently incorporating Osram's Opto Semiconductors LED chips into its products before the acquisition. The acquisition by Osram was a strategic move to enhance Osram's portfolio with tailored specialty lighting solutions, particularly in areas like entertainment, where LED Engin complements Osram's other assets like ClayPaky and ADB. Following the acquisition, LED Engin continues to operate under the ams OSRAM brand, with its products distributed globally through channels like Mouser Electronics.
