About LeCloud
LeCloud, officially known as LeCloud Computing Co., Ltd., was established in 2014 as a subsidiary of the Chinese conglomerate LeEco (formerly LeTV), founded by Jia Yueting. Jia, an entrepreneur who started his career in 2004 by launching the video streaming platform Le.com, built LeEco into a sprawling business empire encompassing video streaming, consumer electronics, and automotive ventures. LeCloud was conceived as the cloud computing arm of this ecosystem, designed to provide the foundational infrastructure for LeEco's vast content delivery network.
The company positioned itself as a provider of a comprehensive Video-as-a-Service (VaaS) model, a concept it introduced in 2014. This model was built on cloud computing, big data, and video technologies to offer an end-to-end public cloud service. LeCloud's services were designed to manage the entire video lifecycle, including content delivery (CDN), cloud-based video on demand (VOD), live streaming, and data processing. The business aimed to serve a wide range of clients, from internet companies and media organizations to enterprise customers needing robust video capabilities. Its business model notably included offering free video CDN and industry cloud services, intending to generate revenue through profit-sharing arrangements with partners on ventures like advertising.
Significant milestones for LeCloud include securing a Series A financing round of 1 billion RMB (approximately $150 million) in March 2016. The firm also established a strategic partnership with Microsoft in 2015 to ensure its solutions were compatible with Microsoft Azure. However, LeCloud's trajectory was inextricably linked to the fortunes of its parent company. Starting in late 2016, LeEco faced severe financial difficulties due to an overly aggressive expansion strategy and an inability to secure new funding. This financial crisis had a direct impact on LeCloud, and by June 2017, the company announced the termination of its personal cloud storage services, citing the need to comply with national regulations against the distribution of illegal content.
