About LDL Technology
LID Technologies operates as a specialized automotive supplier focused on the engineering and sale of intelligent, wireless embedded electronic systems. The company was established in 2004 in Toulouse, France, by Philippe Lefaure, a radio frequency engineer with a passion for automotive mechanics and racing. Lefaure, who previously served as RF Manager at Siemens VDO Automotive, identified an unaddressed need in niche transportation markets for wireless sensor technologies, which major automotive suppliers were not pursuing at the time. The venture's launch was catalyzed by a €200,000 grant from the i-Lab Innovation Contest, sponsored by the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation.
The company's business model centers on designing and commercializing systems for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). LID Technologies serves a diverse client base across several niche markets, including motorcycles, trucks, buses, off-road vehicles, and specialty vehicles in sectors like construction, agriculture, and motorsports. Its prestigious customer list includes brands such as Harley-Davidson, BMW, KTM, Triumph, Iveco, and Navistar. The company generates revenue by selling its hardware systems directly to these manufacturers. While research and development are based in Toulouse, high-volume manufacturing is outsourced to a partner in Thailand, with smaller series production handled in Agen, France. In late 2023, LID Technologies was acquired by and became a member of the global company Amphenol, aiming to expand its market reach.
LID Technologies' product portfolio includes Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS), hands-free access and start systems (PEPS), and telematics control units. The TPMS, branded as "Tire Watch," consists of self-powered sensors that measure pressure and temperature inside the wheel, transmitting this data wirelessly to a control unit to be displayed for the driver. The PEPS technology allows drivers to unlock and start their vehicle without physically using a key fob, using a secure two-way radio communication system. Its telematics systems provide fleet managers with vehicle tracking via GPS/GLONASS and 4G, while also monitoring a wide array of sensors for data points like temperature and door status. A key feature of its telematics box is the Linux-based platform, which allows clients to configure custom applications and algorithms.
