Integrated agricultural services for sustainable farming livelihoods.
About Lawrencedale Agroprocessing India
Lawrencedale Agro Processing India Pvt Ltd (LEAF) is an ag-tech company providing end-to-end services to farmers and re-engineering the fresh produce value chain. Founded in 2009 by Palat Vijayaraghavan, an automobile engineer, the company was established to address the challenges faced by farmers in managing the farming life-cycle. Vijayaraghavan, a long-time resident of the Nilgiris, leverages his experience to apply best farming practices in the Indian context.
LEAF operates as an integrated farmer services company, offering a comprehensive suite of solutions to marginalized farming communities with a focus on sustainability, food safety, and traceability. The company's business model revolves around several key pillars. It provides farmers with training in climate-resilient and sustainable agricultural practices, promotes the use of eco-friendly bio-inputs, and works on the scientific rejuvenation of degraded soils. This approach helps to reduce dependency on harmful chemicals, lower the cost of cultivation, and improve the quality and quantity of the produce. The company employs a "phygital" model, combining a physical presence with a digital platform, the "Leaf Farmer Network," launched in partnership with Mastercard. This platform digitizes marketplaces and connects farmers with buyers, input suppliers, AgTech solutions, and banks, creating a commercially sustainable ecosystem.
The company's revenue is generated through its comprehensive management of the farm-to-fork ecosystem. This includes providing genetically superior planting materials, technical support, post-harvest management through cold storage facilities, and state-of-the-art processing, packaging, and logistics. LEAF owns the entire value chain from harvest to retail for its brand 'LEAF'. The produce is collected, pre-cooled, processed in automated facilities, and then dispatched to distribution centers via a private fleet of refrigerated trucks. Its clients include major retail chains such as Spar Hypermarket, Star Bazaar, Aditya Birla More, Future Group, and Godrej Nature's Basket, as well as online grocers like Big Basket and Grofers.
LEAF has achieved several significant milestones. In 2013, it raised its Series A funding from Aspada Investment Company. This was followed by a Series B round from Denmark-based BESTSELLER Foundation and the US-based Unitus Impact. The company has been recognized for its work, receiving the FICCI - YES Bank National Award for Sustainable Agriculture Development in 2021 and for Sustainable Farmer Income Enhancement in 2022. It is also part of the World Economic Forum's New Vision for Agriculture initiative.
