About Lampiris

Lampiris emerged in 2003 as a strategic entrant into Belgium's newly liberalized energy market, founded by entrepreneurs Bruno Venanzi and Bruno Vanderschueren. Venanzi, with a background in history and economics, along with commercial roles at Belgacom and MCI Worldcom, teamed up with Vanderschueren, whom he met at MCI. Their shared entrepreneurial drive led them to identify and target a nascent niche for renewable energy, positioning themselves as an alternative to the market's dominant players. The company's name itself is derived from 'Lampyris', the genus for glow-worms, reflecting its green-energy focus from the outset.

The firm's business model centered on supplying 100% green electricity and natural gas to the residential sector in Belgium. Lampiris obtained its supply license in 2005 and began commercializing its offerings, later expanding into France in 2010. To ensure a supply of green energy, Lampiris did not rely solely on purchasing energy from European markets; it actively bought electricity directly from small, independent Belgian producers and invested in its own renewable production, including a wind farm and hydroelectric facilities. This approach allowed it to guarantee the origin of its power, a key differentiator that resonated with environmentally-conscious consumers. Over time, the company diversified its services to include thermal insulation, boiler maintenance, and the delivery of firewood.

By 2016, Lampiris had established itself as the third-largest supplier in the Belgian residential energy market, boasting over a million customers across Belgium and France. This success culminated in its acquisition by the French energy major Total (now TotalEnergies) in June 2016 for an estimated €180 million. The acquisition was part of Total's broader strategy to expand its activities in gas and power distribution and increase its footprint in the renewable energy sector. Following the acquisition, Lampiris continued to operate with a degree of independence before being fully rebranded to TotalEnergies in January 2022, marking the end of its journey as an independent challenger brand.
