About La Chapelle

Founded in 1998 by Mr. Xing Jiaxing, Shanghai La Chapelle Fashion Co. Ltd. emerged with a brand concept inspired by the classic, romantic culture of a French side street. The company focuses on the design, marketing, and sale of apparel, primarily targeting the mass-market for women's casualwear in China. It operates a multi-brand strategy to cater to different consumer segments, with brands including La Chapelle, Puella, 7.Modifier, Candie's, and La Babité, among others. The core brand, La Chapelle, was established to blend French romanticism and style with the subtlety of Eastern aesthetics, targeting urban women aged 25-35.

The business model relies on a network of directly controlled and operated retail points, traditionally located in department stores and shopping malls, complemented by an online platform. At its zenith, the company commanded a significant physical retail presence, with nearly 10,000 stores across China and held the distinction of being the first apparel company to be dual-listed on both the A-share market and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The product range is comprehensive, offering tops, bottoms, dresses, and accessories, and has expanded to include menswear and childrenswear. In 2018, the company made its first major overseas investment by acquiring the French fashion chain Naf Naf.

However, the company has faced significant financial headwinds in recent years. Intense competition from faster, more competitively priced e-commerce rivals and a failure to maintain brand differentiation contributed to declining sales. This led to a drastic reduction in its retail footprint, mounting debt, and eventually the liquidation process, which was accepted by the Shanghai Bankruptcy Court in June 2023. After being delisted from the A-share market in 2022, the company was officially delisted from the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in November 2024, following a prolonged suspension of trading and failure to meet resumption guidelines.
