About Kymata

In 1998, a perfect storm was brewing in the world of telecommunications. The internet was exploding, and the demand for bandwidth was insatiable. From this environment, Kymata was born in Livingston, Scotland. The company was founded by a trio: Derek Douglas, Brendan Hyland, and Richard Laming, who spun the venture out of research from Southampton University. The company’s focus was on creating advanced optical components using semiconductor manufacturing techniques. They aimed to build planar integrated optical devices, essentially shrinking complex optical systems onto a single chip to power the burgeoning fiber optic networks. This was a hot space, and Kymata attracted significant attention, raising over £120 million from a host of venture capitalists and corporate investors, including British Telecom and IBM Microelectronics. For a moment, Kymata was a Scottish tech star, with a potential flotation value touted at over £1 billion. The playbook was classic late-90s tech: grow fast, capture the market, and head for a massive exit. The key move came in July 2001, when French telecom giant Alcatel swooped in to acquire the company. The deal, valued at approximately €134 million in shares, was positioned as a strategic masterstroke, giving Alcatel a two-year head start in crucial planar products. However, the story didn't end there. The acquisition occurred just as the dot-com bubble was bursting, and the telecommunications market was heading into a steep downturn. The promise of a Scottish global center for optical components under Alcatel soon faded. In a turn of events, Alcatel later sold the Kymata assets to Avanex Corporation in 2003. This rapid rise and subsequent absorption into larger entities serves as a textbook example of the high-stakes, high-speed corporate maneuvering that defined the turn-of-the-millennium tech boom.
