KuDOS Pharmaceuticals

KuDOS Pharmaceuticals was a biotechnology firm spun out of the University of Cambridge in 1997, founded on the research of Professor Steve Jackson. The company specialized in discovering and developing oncology therapies by inhibiting DNA repair mechanisms in cancer cells. Its primary focus was on small molecule drugs that could selectively target and destroy cancer cells, making them more susceptible to chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

The company's core technology platform centered on DNA damage sensing, signaling, and repair pathways. This research led to the development of PARP (poly-ADP-ribose polymerase) inhibitors, a class of drugs designed to be particularly effective against tumors with specific genetic mutations, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, which are common in certain hereditary breast and ovarian cancers. The goal was to create targeted treatments that would kill cancer cells while leaving healthy cells largely unaffected. The company's lead product candidate, an oral PARP inhibitor later known as Olaparib (Lynparza), entered Phase I clinical trials in 2005.

KuDOS was initially backed by venture capital firms, including Advent Venture Partners, 3i Group, and Johnson & Johnson Development Corporation. To secure the necessary funding for extensive clinical trials and further development, KuDOS agreed to be acquired. In December 2005, AstraZeneca announced its acquisition of KuDOS for approximately $210 million (£120 million), a deal that was finalized in early 2006. Following the acquisition, KuDOS became a subsidiary and a hub for AstraZeneca's DNA repair discovery activities. The development of Olaparib continued under AstraZeneca, and it eventually became the first PARP inhibitor to gain regulatory approval, receiving it from the European Commission and the FDA in 2014 for treating certain types of advanced ovarian cancer.
