About Kosmix

Kosmix was a content categorization and semantic search engine company founded in 2005 by serial entrepreneurs Anand Rajaraman and Venky Harinarayan. The duo, both alumni of IIT Madras and Stanford University, had previously co-founded Junglee, a comparison shopping engine acquired by Amazon in 1998. Their experience at Amazon, where they helped launch the third-party marketplace and invented the concept behind Mechanical Turk, informed their next venture. They also established an early-stage venture fund, Cambrian Ventures, which notably invested in Facebook.

Based in Mountain View, California, Kosmix developed a technology platform designed to automatically scour the web and organize information into topic-based, magazine-style pages. Unlike traditional search engines that return a list of links, Kosmix aimed to provide a comprehensive, multi-dimensional view of a topic by aggregating relevant videos, news, images, and community discussions onto a single dashboard-style page. The core of its service was a proprietary categorization engine, later branded the "Social Genome," which used semantic analysis to understand the connections between people, places, products, and topics as expressed through social media and other online content. The ad-supported platform powered several distinct products, including Kosmix.com for general topic exploration, RightHealth for medical information, and TweetBeat, a real-time social media filter for live events.

The company raised a total of $55.5 million from investors including Accel Partners, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Time Warner Investments, and Jeff Bezos's Bezos Expeditions. In April 2011, Walmart announced its acquisition of Kosmix for a reported sum of over $300 million. The acquisition was a strategic move by the retail giant to bolster its e-commerce capabilities and integrate social and mobile commerce into its operations. The entire Kosmix team was integrated into a new division called @WalmartLabs, with Rajaraman and Harinarayan tasked with shaping Walmart's global digital strategy. Kosmix's technology became the nucleus for @WalmartLabs, which later evolved into Walmart Global Tech, focusing on creating a seamless shopping experience between physical stores and online platforms.
