Knowunity is a German EdTech company that operates an AI-powered, peer-to-peer learning platform. It was founded in 2020 by Benedict Kurz, Gregor Weber, Lucas Hild, and Yannik Prigl, who were 17 years old and still in school at the time. They identified a gap in the education market, noticing that while other sectors were becoming more personalized and technologically advanced, education remained largely one-size-fits-all.

Initially launched as a platform for students to share notes and revision materials, Knowunity has evolved into a comprehensive AI study companion. The platform combines a vast database of over 3 million pieces of student-generated content with personalized AI to make studying more effective and engaging. Its AI is trained on these peer-created materials, localized for different regions, and aligned with national curricula, distinguishing it from generic chatbot solutions. Key features include an AI homework solver, auto-generated flashcards, practice tests, AI-driven summaries of uploaded materials (including PDFs and YouTube videos), and personalized study plans. The app is designed for students from middle school to A-Levels.

The company operates on a freemium business model. Core features and a significant amount of content are available for free, which has driven rapid user acquisition. Revenue is primarily generated through a B2C premium subscription that unlocks advanced features. Knowunity also generates revenue through employer branding partnerships with companies like Vodafone and Porsche. As of June 2025, the platform had over 20 million users across 15 countries and had raised a total of €45 million in funding. The latest Series B funding round of €27 million was led by XAnge, with plans to expand into the US and Asian markets and further develop the AI companion's personalization capabilities.
