KnowGene is a validated scale designed to measure a patient's knowledge regarding cancer genetics, specifically in the context of multigene panel testing (MGPT). Developed through systematic input from genetics experts and evaluated by patient advocates, the tool is used to assess the effectiveness of genetic counseling. The scale consists of a series of items with "true," "false," or "don't know" response options, where "don't know" is scored as incorrect.

The development and validation of the KnowGene scale was led by researchers from institutions including the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Simmons College. It addresses a critical need in clinical practice and research to systematically measure patient understanding after undergoing genetic counseling for hereditary cancer risks. This allows healthcare providers and researchers to inform and improve practice initiatives in the field of cancer genetics.

KnowGene is utilized in studies to evaluate patient outcomes, such as the psychosocial impact of genetic counseling and testing for individuals with various cancers, including ovarian and prostate cancer.
