In 1970, an entrepreneur and technocrat named M. Raja Mohan Reddy started a partnership firm in Andhra Pradesh called Krishna Mohan Constructions. The initial playbook was straightforward: execute state and national highway projects with a focus on solid engineering and reliability. For over two decades, the firm steadily built its reputation in the Indian construction sector. The first major inflection point came in 1993, when the firm incorporated as KMC Constructions Private Limited, quickly followed by a transition to a public limited company in 1994. This wasn't just a change in corporate structure; it was a strategic move to chase a larger footprint across the country, expanding from a regional player to a national one. By the 2000s, KMC had attracted significant attention. The company secured private equity from notable investors like Sequoia Capital and Blue River Capital. The real catalyst arrived in March 2011, when its subsidiary, KMC Infratech, which held its road assets, received a massive ₹500 crore investment from the 3i India Infrastructure Fund. This infusion of capital cemented its position as one of India's largest road portfolio holders and signaled its arrival as a major force in the nation's infrastructure development. Today, managed by Reddy's sons, KMC operates as a diversified infrastructure entity, a long way from its origins as a small partnership firm.
