Kitemill

Kitemill AS, founded in 2008 by Thomas Hårklau, is a Norwegian company at the forefront of the Airborne Wind Energy (AWE) sector. Inspired by the power of kitesurfing, the company is developing a system to generate electricity by accessing high-altitude winds, which are stronger and more consistent than those reached by conventional turbines. Hårklau, the company's CEO, has guided Kitemill through more than a decade of research, development, and strategic growth.

The company's technology centers on an autonomous, airplane-like kite connected by a specialized tether to a ground-based station. This kite, equipped with propellers for vertical takeoff and landing, flies in a helical pattern up to 1,500 meters above the ground. As the kite pulls on the tether, it drives a generator in the ground station to produce electricity, which is then fed into the power grid. The system operates autonomously, with a control system using sensor data to optimize the kite's altitude and flight path for maximum energy generation while ensuring safety. A key operational feature is its two-phase cycle: a power-generating phase where the tether is reeled out, and a brief retraction phase to return the kite to its starting position.

Kitemill's business model is focused on selling its AWE systems to energy companies that develop large-scale wind parks. The company is targeting several market segments, including remote off-grid applications, integration with conventional wind farms, and addressing grid-constrained areas where energy generation sites are far from population centers. A significant advantage of Kitemill's technology is its material efficiency, using up to 90% fewer materials than traditional turbines of the same capacity, which is expected to reduce the levelized cost of energy by half. This smaller physical footprint also minimizes environmental interference during construction and operation. The company has engaged in strategic acquisitions to consolidate expertise and assets, including Scotland's Kite Power Systems (KPS), Dutch firm eKite, and bespoke aircraft maker Exact Aircraft. These moves have expanded its international team and in-house manufacturing capabilities.

The company has achieved significant milestones, including securing multiple rounds of funding from the European Union's EIC Accelerator and Innovation Fund, and attracting private investors like Voss Energi and Expanding Dreams. Kitemill has conducted over 500 test flights with its KM1 prototype and set an endurance record of five hours of continuous operation. Its technology has received third-party verification from DNV and Everoze. Kitemill is currently developing its first commercial-scale system, the KM2, which has a 16-meter wingspan and is designed to generate 100 kW. Plans are in place for this system to be deployed in projects like the Norse Airborne Wind Energy Project (NAWEP).
