Developing safe topical treatment for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia
About Kinopharma
Established in 2005, Kinopharma, Inc. is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, dedicated to the research and development of small-molecule drugs. The company was founded by Hiroshi Onogi, who serves as the Head of Research and Development, and is backed by the foundational research of Professor Masatoshi Hagiwara of Kyoto University. Onogi, following his research roles at CREST and NEDO, and as a research associate at Tokai University, established Kinopharma to translate novel platform technologies into developed treatments. The firm is currently led by CEO Masafumi Kuroishi, who joined as an outside director in 2006 and was appointed CEO in 2010, bringing experience in incubating biotech startups.
Kinopharma's primary strategic focus is on developing first-in-class antiviral drugs that target host factors rather than viral components. This approach aims to create treatments that are less susceptible to drug resistance from viral mutations and can be effective across a wide range of viruses. The company is advancing programs for both DNA and RNA viruses. A significant area of focus is on human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, which can lead to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cervical cancer. Kinopharma is developing a vaginal tablet to treat CIN, aiming to provide a non-surgical option for patients. Clinical trials for this treatment have commenced in Japan and South Korea. In partnership with IWAKI SEIYAKU CO., LTD., the company is also developing and commercializing an ointment for cutaneous warts (verruca vulgaris) caused by HPV. This collaboration has advanced to Phase 2 clinical trials in Japan. Under the agreement, Kinopharma receives upfront payments and is eligible for development milestones and royalties.
Beyond antivirals, Kinopharma's research extends to neurodegenerative diseases, particularly those associated with Down's syndrome and Alzheimer's disease. Their work in this area targets the Dyrk1a gene, a kinase believed to be a primary factor in the hyperphosphorylation of tau protein, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer's. The company's business model involves discovering and developing novel small-molecule drugs to address unmet medical needs and then partnering with larger pharmaceutical companies for commercialization. Kinopharma has secured funding from institutional investors, including Nippon Venture Capital, MBL Venture Capital, and Mitsubishi UFJ Capital.
