Kingo
Kingo provides decentralized solar energy services to families and businesses in off-grid villages across the world
About Kingo
Kingo is a technology-driven enterprise focused on providing clean energy and connectivity to off-the-grid (OTG) communities, primarily targeting subsistence-level farmers in Guatemala and Colombia. The current entity, Kingo Holding Company, Inc., was established in 2022 to acquire and reorganize the business of Ignite Holding Company Inc., which had been operating under the Kingo name since its founding in 2013 by Juan Fermín Rodríguez, Matias de Tezanos, Álvaro Rodríguez, and Peter Kasprowicz. The founders, with backgrounds in mass-market consumer goods, telecommunications, and energy, aimed to address the challenge of energy poverty affecting over a billion people. Juan Fermín Rodríguez, who serves as CEO, previously worked in marketing at Procter & Gamble and was motivated by a desire to create a positive societal and environmental impact.
The company operates on a decentralized utility model, providing prepaid solar power through proprietary rooftop solar home systems (SHS). This approach eliminates the significant upfront cost for users, who instead pay a small, refundable deposit for the installation of a solar energy kit. Kingo's business model is structured as an Energy-as-a-Service, where the company owns, installs, and maintains the equipment at no charge to the customer. Revenue is generated through a pay-as-you-go system, where customers purchase activation codes for periods ranging from a day to a month from a network of local shopkeepers, making the service flexible and accessible. This model mitigates collection risk and provides a more affordable alternative to traditional energy sources like candles and kerosene, with a basic kit powering lights and a USB port for around $8 to $10 per month.
Kingo's core product is a solar energy kit that includes a roof-mounted photovoltaic panel and an orange box containing a lithium battery and a smart energy system. This system features a keypad for users to enter their prepaid codes. The company has developed its own sophisticated software, called "Ant," which utilizes IoT technology to manage operations and remotely perform maintenance, maximizing uptime. Beyond just energy, Kingo leverages its infrastructure to offer satellite internet, enabling financial institutions and other companies to expand their services into these previously unconnected regions. Having raised over $50 million from investors including the Inter-American Development Bank and Leonardo DiCaprio, Kingo has expanded its services to approximately 700 communities, impacting around 250,000 people.
