Kind Designs is a climate-tech company tackling rising sea levels by revolutionizing the coastal construction industry. Founded in 2020 by Anya Freeman, the Miami-based firm manufactures 3D-printed "Living Seawalls" designed to protect coastlines while simultaneously rehabilitating marine ecosystems. Freeman, a Ukrainian-American attorney with a background in environmental policy, was motivated by the lack of effective solutions to coastal flooding and habitat degradation she witnessed in her own community. Her legal background and outsider's perspective on the construction industry allowed her to assemble a multidisciplinary team of engineers, designers, and scientists to develop the company's core product.

The company's primary offering, the Living Seawall, is a direct response to the failings of traditional concrete seawalls, which are often toxic to marine life and offer no ecological benefits. Kind Designs utilizes advanced 3D-printing robotics and a proprietary, eco-friendly concrete mix to produce custom panels that mimic natural coastal habitats like mangrove roots or coral reefs. This biomimicry approach creates textures and crevices that provide shelter for marine organisms, encouraging the growth of oysters, mussels, and sponges, which in turn help filter and clean the water. Research from Florida International University on an early installation showed that over 1,000 oysters and various other species colonized a wall within just nine months. The 3D-printing process is significantly faster than traditional methods, capable of producing a 10-foot panel in about an hour.

Kind Designs operates on a B2B and B2G (business-to-government) model, serving a range of clients including residential and commercial property owners, marine contractors, and government agencies. The company's business model allows local contractors to outsource panel production, enabling them to offer a sustainable alternative without needing to invest in the technology themselves. Revenue is generated through the sale of these custom-printed seawall panels and other related products like "Kind Tiles" and artificial reefs. The company has secured significant funding, including a seed round with notable investor Mark Cuban, and has won grants from the U.S. Navy and Air Force to install its technology at coastal military bases. With a growing pipeline of residential, commercial, and multi-million dollar public-sector projects in Florida and New York, the company is scaling its production from its 50,000-square-foot facility on the Miami River.
