Kifi
Building a network of people and teams collaborating on the web
About Kifi
Kifi, operated by FortyTwo Inc., was founded in 2012 by Dan Blumenfeld and Eishay Smith, technologists with substantial experience at major tech firms. Smith, who served as both Founder/CTO and later CEO, brought a rich background from roles at Netflix, LinkedIn, and IBM, showcasing deep expertise in software engineering and scalable architecture. This experience was foundational to Kifi's mission to address the challenge of knowledge management in an increasingly web-centric work environment.
The company developed a platform designed to help teams and individuals manage, organize, and collaborate on web-based knowledge. Kifi's service allowed users to save web pages into shared or private "Libraries," adding context through on-page discussions and highlights. This created a centralized, searchable repository of a team's collective knowledge, moving beyond document files and fragmented chats. The platform's core functionality included browser extensions and mobile apps that enabled users to collect and analyze links, overlaying context onto their browsing and sharing activities to enhance understanding. A key feature was its full-text search capability, which indexed everything a team saved, making information easily retrievable.
Kifi operated on a freemium business model. The core service was free for individuals and teams, with premium features available for businesses, such as administrative access controls and integration with popular workplace tools like Slack. This strategy helped the company attract a user base of over 90,000 people and 100 teams. After raising a total of $11 million, including a $10 million Series A round in 2015, the company's trajectory culminated in a significant milestone. In July 2016, the Kifi team was acqui-hired by Google to join its Spaces team, which was focused on improving group sharing and content discovery. Following the acquisition, the Kifi service was shut down, with users given the option to export their data.
