About Kemira Chemicals
In the aftermath of World War I, the newly independent nation of Finland faced a critical challenge: food security. To ensure the nation could feed itself, the Finnish State made a strategic decision in 1920. It founded a company with the lengthy name Valtion Rikkihappo-ja Superfosfaattitehtaat Oy, or the 'State Sulphuric Acid and Superphosphate Plants'. Led by its first CEO, Felix Hedman, the mission was clear: to produce fertilizers and bolster domestic agriculture. For decades, the company focused on its foundational purpose, expanding its chemical portfolio and playing a key role in Finland's industrialization. The business eventually simplified its name to Kemira in 1971. This change signaled a broader ambition beyond its original mandate. The company began a significant pivot, shifting its focus from fertilizers to specialized chemicals for water-intensive industries. Today, Kemira provides solutions for treating water and improving the efficiency of pulp and paper production. A pivotal moment in this transformation occurred on November 10, 1994, when Kemira's shares were listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange. This IPO marked its evolution from a wholly state-owned enterprise into a publicly traded company, opening it up to new capital and global markets. This strategic shift allowed Kemira to divest its original fertilizer business and double down on its new core focus: creating sustainable chemical solutions for a world in need of clean water and renewable materials.
