Karmaloop
Online retailer for cutting edge fashion and everything from the verge culture
About Karmaloop
Karmaloop emerged in 1999 from the basement of founder Greg Selkoe in Boston, Massachusetts, conceived as an online destination for streetwear and boutique brands that were otherwise hard to find. Selkoe, whose background includes a Master's in Public Policy from Harvard University and a stint as an Urban Planner for the city of Boston, drew inspiration from his interests in graffiti art and breakdancing. His vision was to create more than just an e-commerce site; he aimed to build a community around what he termed "Verge Culture," targeting creative, digital-native early adopters of trends in music, fashion, and art.

The business operates as a multi-platform online retailer, generating revenue through direct-to-consumer sales of apparel, accessories, and footwear from a curated selection of brands. In its prime, Karmaloop was a critical platform for emerging streetwear labels, providing them with a national and global audience. The company expanded its ecosystem to include several specialized web properties. One notable extension was PLNDR.com, a members-only flash sale site launched in May 2010 that offered significant discounts on premium apparel and became a fast-growing segment for the company. Other ventures included the women's fashion site MissKL, the independent marketplace Kazbah, and KarmaloopTV, an internet television station launched with Pharrell Williams.
At its peak in 2013, Karmaloop's annual revenue reached $127 million. However, the company's aggressive expansion, including a significant $14 million investment into developing KarmaloopTV as a cable channel, led to financial strain. Coupled with an over-reliance on deep discounting to generate cash flow, the company accumulated substantial debt. In 2015, Karmaloop filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, citing over $100 million in debt. Following the bankruptcy, investment firms Comvest Capital and CapX Partners acquired the company, appointing Seth Haber as CEO and moving Selkoe to an advisory role. In March 2016, Karmaloop was sold again to Shiekh Shoes, a California-based footwear and apparel retailer. Despite these ownership changes, the website continues to operate, focusing on its core e-commerce business of selling streetwear.
