Karate Combat
Professional full-contact karate league with Web3 integration
About Karate Combat
Karate Combat is a professional full-contact striking league that hosts worldwide events. Founded in 2017 by Robert Bryan, and having hosted events since April 2018, the company aims to promote karate to a new generation of sports fans by blending live-action competition with immersive CGI environments powered by Unreal Engine. The league is currently headed by President Asim Zaidi. Events are broadcast in over 100 countries.
Fights take place in a square combat pit and consist of three, three-minute rounds, following a 10-point must system for scoring. The league features a roster of over 100 professional karateka from various countries and karate styles, competing across eight weight divisions for a seasonal championship. In 2024, the league also introduced a submission grappling series called "Pit Submission Series".
A significant aspect of Karate Combat's business model is its integration of Web3 technology. In 2023, the league transitioned to be governed by fans through the $KARATE token. This token allows fans to participate in governance, vote on upcoming fights, and engage with the league via the 'Up Only Gaming' app. The token, which operates on the Hedera and Ethereum blockchains, is central to the company's fan engagement and revenue strategy, alongside broadcast rights and sponsorships. The company is owned by the Sensei Foundation, a Cayman Islands Foundation Company.
