Jumbo: Take back control of your data and privacy MoreLess
Jumbo Privacy was a mobile-first security and privacy company founded in 2019 by seasoned entrepreneur Pierre Valade. Valade previously co-founded the popular calendar app Sunrise, which was acquired by Microsoft in 2015 for a reported $100 million. His experience with building a successful consumer app and his growing concern for online data privacy prompted him to establish Jumbo, aiming to simplify the complex world of privacy settings for everyday users.
The company's core product was the Jumbo app for iOS and Android, which functioned as a personal privacy assistant. It empowered users by providing a centralized dashboard to manage privacy settings across various online services like Facebook, Google, Twitter, and Amazon. Key features included the ability to automatically delete old social media posts, clear search histories, remove voice assistant recordings, scan for data breaches, and block online trackers. The app was designed with a strong emphasis on user trust; it operated locally on the user's device without storing or processing personal data on its own servers, a key differentiator in the market.
Jumbo's business model evolved over its lifetime. Initially launched as a free app, it later introduced a subscription-based model with premium tiers (Jumbo Plus and Pro) to generate revenue without selling user data. This strategy proved challenging, and in January 2023, the company pivoted dramatically by making all features free, including up to $1 million in identity theft insurance for U.S. users. The new plan was to monetize through a B2B SaaS offering, selling protection services to businesses for their employees. This shift, however, was short-lived. In June 2023, Jumbo announced its acquisition by Coalition, a cyber insurance and security company. Following the acquisition, the Jumbo app was discontinued as a standalone product, with services officially ending by June 2024.
