About JLD - Laguë

The story of JLD-Laguë is one of legacy and strategic consolidation. It begins with two separate family-run businesses, each a John Deere dealership. Équipements Laguë was founded in 1951 in Farnham, Quebec by Roger Laguë. Over the years, his business grew to include six stores. Separately, in 1972, Jean-Yves and Daniel Dion founded the JLD Group in Mirabel. For decades, both companies operated independently, building their presence in the agricultural equipment market. The major turning point came in 2012 when Équipements Laguë and JLD Group announced they would merge, a transaction undertaken in partnership with Champlain Financial Corporation. This move, formally completed in March 2013, created Groupe JLD Laguë, the largest John Deere dealer in Quebec and Eastern Ontario. The strategic rationale was clear: combining forces provided access to a larger inventory of machinery and parts, enabled greater investment in employee training, and created a more competitive entity in a changing market. This wasn't a hostile takeover but a partnership, with key shareholders and employees from both original companies retaining a stake in the new group. Following the merger, JLD-Laguë continued its growth-by-acquisition strategy. In 2021, an investor group led by Champlain, which had backed the initial merger, acquired the company to continue its consolidation strategy in Eastern Canada. This solidified JLD-Laguë's position as a major dealership network for both John Deere equipment and Peterbilt trucks.
