Jenoptik
Global technology group operating in the photonics market
About Jenoptik
Jenoptik AG is a German photonics and optical-technology group headquartered in Jena. It designs, manufactures, and markets precision optical and optoelectronic systems, laser devices, imaging modules, metrology equipment, and smart mobility solutions. The company serves a diversified industrial customer base spanning semiconductor equipment, medical technology, industrial automation, traffic and road safety, and security.
Founded in 1991 from the remnants of the former Zeiss Jena operations, Jenoptik combines deep roots in classical optics with modern photonic engineering. It publicly trades on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and is included in the MDAX index. In 2023 the company recorded revenues exceeding one billion euros and employs roughly 4,600 people worldwide.
Jenoptik’s structure is organized around two core divisions: Advanced Photonic Solutions, which focuses on optical components, laser systems, imaging, and metrology; and Smart Mobility Solutions, which develops sensor, camera, and monitoring systems for road safety, traffic enforcement, and infrastructure surveillance. In recent years, the company has streamlined its portfolio by divesting non-core assets (notably the Vincorion mechatronics business) to concentrate on photonics and systems where it can maintain technological leadership.
In 2025, Jenoptik warned of increased uncertainty from global trade barriers, revising its full-year guidance downward. Meanwhile it continues to invest in research and expansion of market share in semiconductor optics, medical imaging, and urban mobility systems.
