The company was founded in 1997 by Ted Lee and John Carlan in Oakville, Ontario. Initially focused on offering 3D design software, Javelin expanded its portfolio to include product data management, automation, additive manufacturing (industrial 3D printing), laser scanning, training, and consulting services.

The company serves over 6,000 businesses across various industries, including aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, medical, and education. Its business model is centered on being a reseller of key industry software and hardware, most notably SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD software and Stratasys 3D printers. Revenue is generated through the sale of these products, supplemented by services such as certified training, technical support, consulting, and implementation.

A significant milestone in the company's history was the May 2018 merger with Cimetrix Solutions, a specialist in additive manufacturing and laser scanning. This merger, facilitated by private equity firm CAI Capital Partners, created a combined entity with a coast-to-coast presence in Canada and strengthened its additive manufacturing capabilities. Following the merger, Cimetrix operated as a division of Javelin. In May 2021, TriMech, a U.S.-based technology solutions provider, acquired Javelin Technologies. Javelin now operates as TriMech's Canadian business, under the name 'Javelin Technologies, a TriMech Company.'
