Jaspersoft

Jaspersoft operates as a subsidiary of Cloud Software Group, specializing in business intelligence (BI) and reporting software. The company's origins trace back to June 2001, when Romanian Java engineer Teodor Danciu began developing JasperReports, an open-source reporting library. Faced with the high cost and integration difficulties of existing proprietary solutions like Crystal Reports for a Java-based application, Danciu decided to build his own. He named it JasperReports, with "Jasper" being a nod to crystal and the "J" standing for Java.

The project was registered on SourceForge in September 2001, and the first version was released in November of that year. In 2001, Al Campa and Raj Bhargava founded a company called Panscopic, which raised $23 million from investors. Recognizing the potential of Danciu's creation, Panscopic teamed up with him in 2004, acquired the intellectual property for JasperReports, and rebranded the company as Jaspersoft. Brian Gentile, who had a background at Apple, Sun Microsystems, and Informatica, took the helm as CEO in 2007. A significant milestone was the acquisition of Jaspersoft by TIBCO Software on April 28, 2014, for approximately $185 million, a move designed to expand TIBCO's presence in the embedded BI market.

Jaspersoft's business model is centered on a commercial open-source strategy. It provides a free, open-source Community Edition to developers and a commercial Professional Edition that includes enhanced features, support, and warranties for enterprise clients. Revenue is generated through these professional licenses, as well as OEM licenses for software developers who wish to embed the JasperReports engine into their own closed-source products. The company's core market consists of software developers and businesses of all sizes, from small and medium-sized businesses to large enterprises, that need to embed reporting, dashboards, and analytics into their applications. The software is designed to be data-agnostic, connecting to a wide array of data sources including relational databases, XML, JSON, and big data stores.

The product portfolio forms a comprehensive BI suite. The foundation is the JasperReports Library, the Java-based reporting engine that transforms raw data into formatted reports. Jaspersoft Studio is a desktop-based graphical designer for creating pixel-perfect reports and complex data visualizations. JasperReports Server functions as a standalone BI platform, enabling users to manage, schedule, and distribute reports and interactive dashboards. More recently, the company introduced JasperReports IO, a reporting engine built for modern cloud and microservice architectures, delivered as a container-ready RESTful service. This allows developers to embed analytics capabilities directly into web applications with a developer-friendly API, catering to the growing demand for embedded BI.
