IXI Mobile
Provider of wireless software solutions for network operators, manufacturers and consumers
About IXI Mobile
IXI Mobile, Inc. operated in the wireless communications equipment sector, focusing on the development of data-centric mobile devices and services for the mass market. The company was established in 2000 by entrepreneurs Amit Haller and Gidi Barak and maintained headquarters in Belmont, California, with research and development facilities in Israel and Romania. Amit Haller, a serial inventor, had previously founded Butterfly Communications, a pioneer in Bluetooth chipsets acquired by Texas Instruments in 1999. This background in communications technology directly informed the vision for IXI Mobile.
The company's flagship product was the Ogo family of handheld devices, which launched in September 2004. Ogo was conceived to provide Blackberry-like functionality to a broader consumer base, concentrating on text-based communication rather than voice calls. These clamshell devices featured a full QWERTY keyboard and were engineered to offer unlimited instant messaging (supporting AOL, Yahoo!, and MSN), email, and SMS for a flat monthly fee. The business model centered on providing a turnkey solution—encompassing hardware and the proprietary IXI-Connect OS—to mobile operators and service providers worldwide. These partners, such as AT&T Wireless, Swisscom Mobile, and others in Europe, would then market the device and data plans to their subscribers.
The Ogo was specifically targeted at the youth market, who were early adopters of texting and instant messaging. Despite an initial launch in the U.S. with AT&T Wireless, the partnership was short-lived following AT&T's merger with Cingular. The device found more traction in European markets. However, IXI Mobile faced significant financial challenges. After raising approximately $157 million in total funding from investors including Intel, Texas Instruments, and Draper Fisher Jurvetson, the company underwent a merger with Israel Technology Acquisition Corp. (ITAC) in 2006 to go public, rather than pursuing a traditional IPO. By 2008, facing mounting losses and the rapid evolution of smartphones that integrated the Ogo's core messaging features, IXI Mobile withdrew from the U.S. market and underwent significant downsizing.
