itsme Digital ID
Secure digital identity for authentication and signing
About itsme Digital ID
itsme®, operated by the Belgian Mobile ID consortium, provides a digital identity application for secure online authentication, transaction confirmation, and electronic document signing. The company was founded in 2017 as a unique collaboration between Belgium's four largest banks (Belfius, BNP Paribas Fortis, ING, KBC) and three leading mobile network operators (Orange Belgium, Proximus, Telenet). In 2021, the Belgian Federal Government, through its investment arm FPIM/SFPI, acquired a 20% stake, reinforcing the public-private partnership structure.
The itsme® app offers a single, secure method for users to manage their digital identity across various platforms, replacing the need for multiple passwords and card readers. It serves individuals, businesses, and government entities, enabling services like customer onboarding, login authentication, payment confirmations, and legally binding qualified electronic signatures (QES) compliant with the EU's eIDAS regulation. Its business model is based on a fee paid by partner organizations per user per year, while the app remains free for citizens. This model has proven sustainable, with the company reporting profitability for the first time in 2022 and a profit of €5.4 million in 2024.
Headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, itsme® has seen significant user adoption, with over seven million users in Belgium, representing more than 80% of the adult population. The platform processes an average of 1.3 million actions daily. Following its success in Belgium, the company has expanded its services to the Netherlands and Luxembourg and is available in 17 European countries, with plans for further international growth.
