In 1984, long before 'customer experience' was a common boardroom buzzword, a company called Sky Alland Research was founded by J. Schuyler 'Sky' Alland. It started with a clear focus on customer service and loyalty management, operating as a traditional research firm. Following the founder's tragic death in 1992, the company navigated a path forward, evolving with the dawn of the internet. The turn of the millennium marked a pivotal moment. Now rebranded as iSKY, the company was no longer just a research firm; it was a provider of outsourced, real-time, data-driven customer care services for the new economy. This transformation caught the attention of major investors. In 2000, iSKY secured a significant capital infusion, raising $80 million in two funding rounds from backers including GE Capital and EchoStar. This positioned the company to expand its tech-driven approach to managing customer relationships for large corporations. The next chapter in the iSKY journey was a defining one. In April 2004, the company was acquired by The Resource Group (TRG), a publicly-traded IT services firm. Under the leadership of its CEO at the time, Michael Borton, iSKY was integrated into TRG's larger portfolio. This move represented a classic playbook strategy: a larger enterprise acquiring a specialized company to gain its expertise and client list, while expanding iSKY's service capabilities to include offshore resources.
