About IRLAB Therapeutics
IRLAB Therapeutics AB is a Swedish biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of new treatments for Parkinson's disease and other central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Founded in 2013, the company's origins trace back to the research of Nobel Laureate Professor Arvid Carlsson, specifically concerning the link between brain neurotransmitter disorders and brain diseases. The company was co-founded by Nicholas Waters, Susanna Holm Waters, and Clas Sonesson, all of whom have extensive backgrounds in pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, and drug development, much of it working together at prior companies like Carlsson Research and NeuroSearch. This experienced team continues to be integral to the company's operations.
The company's business model is centered on its proprietary research platform, the Integrative Screening Process (ISP). This systems biology-based platform utilizes a vast, proprietary database of CNS compounds compiled over 25 years, combined with machine learning and advanced analytics, to identify and develop novel drug candidates. The ISP platform aims to increase the probability of clinical success compared to industry standards. IRLAB's revenue generation strategy involves advancing these candidates through clinical trials to establish their value and then entering into licensing agreements with larger pharmaceutical companies for late-stage development and commercialization. A key example is the 2021 exclusive worldwide licensing deal with Ipsen for the drug candidate mesdopetam, which included a $28 million upfront payment and potential milestones of up to $335 million, plus royalties.
IRLAB's pipeline targets significant unmet needs in Parkinson's disease management. Its most advanced candidate, mesdopetam (IRL790), is a dopamine D3-receptor antagonist designed to treat levodopa-induced dyskinesia (involuntary movements), a common and debilitating side effect of long-term levodopa therapy. Another key asset, pirepemat (IRL752), is in Phase IIb trials to evaluate its effectiveness in improving balance and reducing fall frequency in Parkinson's patients. The company also has earlier stage programs, including IRL757 for apathy in neurodegenerative disorders, and two preclinical candidates, IRL942 and IRL1117. Publicly traded on the Nasdaq Stockholm Main Market since 2020, IRLAB actively engages with the capital markets to fund its development pipeline.
