About IPhrase Technologies
Founded in 1999, iPhrase Technologies carved a niche in the enterprise software market by providing e-business and e-service solutions designed to enhance online customer interactions. The company was co-founded by Dr. Raymond Lau, who served as the Chief Technology Officer. Dr. Lau's journey into this field began at a young age when he developed the StuffIt data compression software for Macintosh computers. His work in data compression led him to recognize the similarities between its mathematical models and those for language processing, sparking his interest in the area. He further honed his expertise at MIT's Spoken Language Systems Group before co-founding iPhrase.
iPhrase developed a suite of services that included online customer support, email and case resolution, knowledge management for contact centers, and e-commerce search. The company's core offering revolved around advanced search and online customer interaction solutions, utilizing natural language processing to interpret customer queries. This technology enabled businesses with complex product lines to automate their sales, service, and support operations. The software could understand customer queries, even those with misspellings or jargon, to quickly locate answers, facilitate purchases, and resolve issues without needing human assistance. For e-commerce clients, the platform could dynamically generate customized web pages with relevant products based on individual customer needs.
The company's business model focused on providing these technology solutions to large enterprises. By 2004, iPhrase had amassed 150 customers and established partnerships with over a dozen CRM and web infrastructure companies. The company secured significant venture capital funding, raising a total of $42.3 million over several rounds from investors including Greylock, Sequoia Capital, CRV, Bain Capital Ventures, and FTV Capital. A key milestone for iPhrase was the acquisition of Banter Systems, Inc. in January 2004, a provider of automatic classification software. This all-stock transaction expanded iPhrase's natural language processing capabilities to include email and chat, doubled the size of its engineering team, and broadened its partner coverage into the CRM market. Ultimately, in November 2005, iPhrase Technologies was acquired by IBM and integrated into its Information Management Division.
