Leading provider of global mobile connectivity MoreLess
iPass Inc. was a provider of global mobile connectivity, operating on a software-as-a-service (SaaS) business model. The company was founded in California in July 1996 by Chris Moore and later reincorporated in Delaware in June 2000. It became a publicly traded company on July 24, 2003, raising over $100 million in its initial public offering. Throughout its history, iPass made several strategic acquisitions to enhance its service offerings, including Safe3w and Mobile Automation in 2004, and GoRemote in 2006. A significant shift occurred in 2015 under CEO Gary Griffiths and CCO Patricia Hume, who introduced iPass Unlimited, a flat-fee subscription for unlimited Wi-Fi usage, and expanded the hotspot network to 50 million. This led to the launch of iPass SmartConnect in November 2015.
The company's core offering was the iPass SmartConnect cloud-based service, which provided users with access to a vast network of Wi-Fi hotspots. This service was available through an application for laptops and mobile devices, an SDK, or APK solutions. The platform served business travelers and enterprises, enabling employees to remain connected globally across airports, hotels, airplanes, and public venues. Revenue was generated primarily through per-user, per-month fixed-fee subscriptions for unlimited Wi-Fi access. The service's key feature was its patented technology that used analytics to evaluate factors like signal strength, speed, and bandwidth to automatically connect users to the best-performing hotspot available, aiming to provide a seamless and secure connection.
In February 2019, iPass was acquired by Pareteum Corporation in an all-stock transaction and its shares ceased trading on Nasdaq. This acquisition was intended to expand Pareteum's customer base and service portfolio. Subsequently, Pareteum itself underwent restructuring, and in July 2022, the iPass business was acquired by Channel Ventures Group, LLC, a subsidiary of the Dutch investment group Channel Holding B.V. Following Pareteum's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, iPass Inc. officially went out of business on October 21, 2022. However, the technology and brand continued under new ownership, with Channel Holding integrating iPass's patented technology for automatic network switching into its ChannelX platform.
