Intuitive Machines

Intuitive Machines, a space exploration and infrastructure company, was founded in 2013 by Stephen Altemus, Dr. Kam Ghaffarian, and Dr. Tim Crain. The founders leveraged their extensive experience from NASA to establish the company; Altemus is a former Director of Engineering at NASA's Johnson Space Center, and Crain was a key figure in NASA's Project Morpheus, which developed a prototype lander technology that influenced Intuitive Machines' designs. Initially, the company applied its human spaceflight engineering expertise to terrestrial challenges in healthcare and energy before pivoting to lunar exploration in 2018 when NASA introduced the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program.

The company's business model is centered on providing end-to-end services for the emerging cislunar economy, structured around four primary units: Lunar Access Services, Lunar Data Services, Orbital Services, and Space Products and Infrastructure. Revenue is primarily generated through contracts with government agencies like NASA and commercial clients for delivering payloads to the moon, providing data transmission, and developing lunar infrastructure. The company has secured multiple contracts under NASA's CLPS initiative, including a notable $118 million award for its first mission and another $116.9 million contract for a subsequent delivery to the Moon's South Pole. Intuitive Machines became a publicly traded company on the Nasdaq under the ticker LUNR in February 2023 after merging with a special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC), Inflection Point Acquisition Corp.

A significant milestone was achieved in February 2024 when its Nova-C class lander, named Odysseus, successfully executed a soft landing on the Moon. This event marked the first time a private company accomplished a lunar landing and was the first American spacecraft to touch down on the lunar surface since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. The Odysseus lander, which carried payloads for both NASA and commercial customers, demonstrated key capabilities such as deep-space engine ignition with methalox propellant and precision navigation to the lunar surface. Despite an off-nominal landing that caused the lander to tip, it successfully transmitted data. The company is developing more advanced landers, like the larger Nova-D, and is working with partners to create a Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) for future Artemis missions. It is also building out a Lunar Data Network, a satellite constellation intended to provide continuous communication and navigation services on and around the Moon.
