Founded in 2009, the company specializes in the registration and administration of large domain portfolios, offering over 1,000 different top-level domains (TLDs). RegistryGate operates on a business-to-business model, providing backend services to established resellers like web hosters and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) rather than serving end-customers directly.

The company is part of a larger corporate structure that includes PartnerGate GmbH and InterNetWire Communications GmbH. InterNetWire, founded in 1996, was an early internet pioneer in Germany and developed the "PartnerGate" domain management system. RegistryGate was established to act as the neutral, ICANN-accredited purchasing entity for PartnerGate, which handles the distribution of the domain management system to resellers. This structure allows PartnerGate's clients to manage large numbers of domains through a centralized, automated platform without PartnerGate competing with their own retail offerings. Over the years, the group managed to handle over one million domains.

In 2017, the group underwent a significant change when Key-Systems GmbH, part of the Team Internet Group (formerly CentralNic Group PLC), became the new shareholder, succeeding founder Andreas Schreiner. This integration positioned PartnerGate and RegistryGate within a global network, enhancing their technological capabilities and market reach while maintaining a focus on the German-speaking market. RegistryGate's core service is providing direct, fast, and reliable access to gTLD and ccTLD registries for its reseller partners.
